Tottenham's plans for Sergio Reguilon could be thrown into chaos by Real Madrid.
Reguilon joined Spurs on a deal worth around £25million from Real Madrid in the summer transfer window, joining as part of a double deal with Gareth Bale joining on a season-long loan.
The left-back has impressed since his arrival, making 13 Premier League appearances and instantly installing himself as a regular under Jose Mourinho, although he has struggled with injury of late.
But there is a clause in Reguilon's contract which has meant Spurs fans have seldom been able to sit comfortably when it comes to talk of his future.
Real Madrid hold a buy-back clause which they can activate either this summer or next summer which would see Spurs make around £15million profit.
Given Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane sanctioned Reguilon's exit, the clause hasn't been too much of a concern for Tottenham, but recent developments in the Spanish capital might change that.
Real Madrid have fallen way behind in the La Liga title race, now 10 points behind city rivals Atletico Madrid despite having played a game more.
That's after a surprise defeat to Levante on the weekend, making it two shock defeats in as many weeks following a Copa del Rey exit at the hands of underdogs Alcoyano recently.
And reports from Marca and Carrusel Deportivo claim the decision over Zidane's future was made, not this week following Real Madrid's latest defeat, but back in November.
Zidane is already in his second spell as manager of the club having returned in 2019 following his initial departure in 2018, but support for the Frenchman has collapsed and it's said the Real Madrid board have already decided they will replace him this summer.
That concerns Spurs because a new manager this summer could mean a chance of stance on Reguilon, particularly with veteran full-back Marcelo struggling for form at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Tottenham can do little more than sit back and hope a change of managers at Real Madrid doesn't result in a Reguilon return, but it is thought the Spanish giants will take the player's desires into account and the full-back is understood to be happy at present.
