The nightmare run of games facing Chelsea that could hand Tottenham a Champions League lifeline

Tottenham's poor run of form in the Premier League continued on Saturday as they drew 0-0 at Watford.

Having come very close to actually losing at Vicarage Road as Troy Deeney missed a penalty in the second half, Jose Mourinho's team almost grabbed the three points at the death as Erik Lamela's effort was a matter of millimetres from crossing the line.

Spurs were agonisingly close to picking up a crucial win and Ignacio Pussetto's goalline clearance on his debut could prove so crucial come the end of the season.

It really was fine lines and what made it even worse was the fact that Chelsea dropped points in the evening kick-off as they lost in stoppage time against Newcastle United.

That means that eight points currently separate the two sides in the race for a Champions League place with 15 games to go, although Manchester United, Wolves and Sheffield United are above Spurs at present.

Mourinho's men have already proved that they can whittle down a big lead having moved to within three points of the Blues prior to Christmas after previously trailing them by 12.

Another big effort is going to be needed from the team or they will miss out on a fifth successive year of Champions League football.

Plenty of points are going to be won and lost between now and the end of the season, with Spurs potentially having the chance to close in on Frank Lampard's side over the next month going on the Blues' league fixtures.

Facing Arsenal on Tuesday evening at Stamford Bridge, the Europa League holders also play Leicester City and Manchester United before the Lilywhites make the trip to SW6 on Saturday, February 22.

However, Spurs closing in on them may well depend on if the club can bring in a new frontman in Harry Kane's absence.
