The nightmare Champions League scenario Chelsea face as they take on Valencia

After the disappointment of losing to Manchester City on Saturday, the Blues now have to turn their attention to the Champions League.

The Blues are on their way to Spain to face Valencia in the Mestalla Stadium, but their European hopes are on a knife-edge going into the game.

Out of all the Champions League groups right now, it is Chelsea's that is really in the balance with three clubs all with the possibility of getting through to the last 16.

With two matches remaining, Chelsea, Ajax and Valencia are all sitting on seven points apiece, but if the group were to finish now then Ajax and Chelsea would go into the last 16.

The way that the knockout stages are determined if the points finish level at the end of the group stages is done through the amount of points picked up through head-to-head matches.

So as it stands the head-to-head points so far are:

Ajax 4 (A win over Valencia and draw to Chelsea)

Chelsea 4 (A win and a draw over Ajax)

Valencia 3 (A win over Chelsea)

For Chelsea, however, a win in the Mestalla would put them into the last 16 and would be vital if they want to avoid slipping into the Europa League in the turn of the year.

With Ajax playing Lille tomorrow night, the Dutch side are the strong favourites with the Ligue 1 team having already been knocked out of the competition.

So if the Blues were to lose at the Mestalla Stadium tomorrow night, then Chelsea's chances of getting through to the last 16 would be in tatters.

The Dutch side and Valencia face each other in the final match of the group stages, which means they could just play out a draw at the Johan Cruijff ArenA.

While a draw would take the group down to the wire for Chelsea, a victory would secure them qualification, but a defeat would likely mean Europa League action once again.
