The night superstar Tom Jones went for a pint at a Cardiff pub - and did an impromptu gig

Superstar Tom Jones went for a pint in a Cardiff pub – and treated customers to an hour-long show of some of his biggest hits.

Tom turned up at Gassy Jack’s in Cathays at midnight in October 1992 to watch his backing band play a “jamming” session.

But when he got there he found the bar closed – so he joined the band on stage and gave a free show.

About 150 people, who had earlier paid £1.50 to see South Wales soul band Mighty Pledge play live at the pub, couldn’t believe their eyes as one of the biggest names in showbiz walked through the door and started singing.

The star, who played to sell-out houses at Cardiff’s St David’s Hall the previous week, arrived at the American-style saloon bar.

His backing band, The NWCs had been at the pub for an hour playing for the drinkers.

They were invited to join a party to celebrate the opening of Gassy Jack’s six months earlier. But no one expected Tom.

Pub promoter Alan Jones, said at the time: “It was a brilliant night. Tom sang for almost an hour, belting out all his big hits.

“Tom sang 12 songs and he obviously didn’t want to leave the stage. He told me afterwards that he was thrilled at the fantastic reaction he received from such a young crowd.”
