The night Mauricio Pochettino the dreamer made Spurs believe they can win the Champions League

Wednesday, April 17, 2019 proved to be a momentous day in the history of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club as they reached the semi-finals of the Champions League following an enthralling night of football against Man City.

The game really did have it all and it's still hard to believe what happened over the course of the 90 minutes in Manchester.

How do you sum up last night?

Well, to be honest, words can't even do it justice as there are not enough superlatives to describe what actually happened on the pitch.

There was enough drama to last a lifetime from the first whistle to the very last kick of the game

Leading 1-0 from the first leg last Tuesday thanks to Son Heung-min's late strike at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the worst possible thing they could do was concede early on against Pep Guardiola's team.

The most important thing is that Spurs are now in the final four of Europe's elite competition and their fans, as well as everyone else watching on across the globe, really went through a whole host of emotions as they achieved the unthinkable.

The reigning Premier League champions are extremely hard to stop once they get on a roll and that's just what happened.

Having defended so well in the previous round at Borussia Dortmund as the German side put them under intense pressure in the first half, it only took four minutes for the hosts to breach the Spurs defence as Raheem Sterling curled home a truly wonderful effort.

While he did have way too much space on the wing, take nothing away from his shot as it gave Hugo Lloris absolutely no chance as it flew into the bottom corner.

City fans went delirious in the stands at the Etihad and they now sensed victory and the opportunity to go a stage further than last year.

The next goal would prove crucial in the tie.

Given the vast majority of fans in the stadium expected the previous Champions League favourites to be the next team to find the net, Son threw a cat amongst the pigeons as he restored parity after some poor play by Aymeric Laporte on the edge of the box.

The Lilywhites now had the crucial away goal and it meant that Guardiola's team had to score three on the evening to progress.

Scratch that, it was now four as Son put Spurs into a shock lead three minutes later with the goal of the night.

Lucas Moura won the ball back in City's half to play in Christian Eriksen, who in turn fed his teammate to find the top corner with a mesmerising effort that left Ederson with no chance.

The fans were now on cloud nine and dreaming of the final in Madrid after the most incredible start to the return leg.

What Spurs now needed to do was hold firm.

That didn't happen as Bernardo Silva equalised one minute later via a deflection off Danny Rose, before Sterling miraculously made it 3-2 with a simple finish after a frantic 21 minutes on the clock.

Spurs were really now up against it and their job was made even harder by Moussa Sissoko having to be substituted moments before half-time following an innocuous looking challenge with Kevin De Bruyne.

Limited options in midfield meant that Fernando Llorente was brought on and pushed upfront, with Dele Alli dropping deeper alongside Victor Wanyama.

Lloris denied Sterling from point-blank range and a brilliant last-ditch tackle from Rose on Silva stopped City adding a fourth, before the goalkeeper produced an even better save to stop De Bruyne's rocket from finding the top corner with a sublime one-handed block.

However, their fourth goal duly arrived not long after with Sergio Aguero smashing the ball home after De Bruyne worked his magic with a driving run towards the penalty box.

The drama was then to go up several notches in the final twenty minutes as Llorente made a vital contribution as he found the net from Kieran Trippier's corner.

The celebrations were immediately put on hold, however, with referee Cuneyt Cakir checking VAR to see if the ball went in off the Spaniard's arm.

Thankfully for Pochetino and Spurs, it counted.

The biggest call then came in stoppage time as Sterling thought he had sent his side through to the semi-finals with his hat-trick.

Twenty years on from their incredible stoppage-time comeback against Gillingham in the then Division Two play-off final at Wembley, as well as seven years on from Aguero's dramatic effort that saw them win the Premier League for the very first time ahead of great rivals Manchester United, it looked like City had done it once again in the dying embers of the game.

Alderweireld's Ajax message, Silva's awful corner & Guardiola interrupted - Spurs moments missed

Eriksen stupidly lost the ball in his own half when he needed to take better care of it, with Aguero then playing in Sterling to find the bottom corner.

Guardiola was off down the touchline to celebrate with his teammates as the City fans went absolutely wild as their quadruple dreams somehow still remained alive.

However, VAR ruled that Aguero was adjudged to be in an offside position as Silva's ball found its way through to City's all-time top goalscorer.

Talk about fine margins.

Minutes after the home fans celebrated like they had reached the Champions League final, it was now the turn of the visiting support to go nuts as the referee blew his whistle to signal the end of a truly breathless encounter.

As the Tottenham team ran over to party in front of their brilliant travelling support, Pochettino celebrated like never before with Jesus Perez and the rest of his coaching staff.

The Spurs boss really had been through the wringer over the course of the game and you really saw what it meant to him after such a tough year for the club on and off the pitch.

A rollercoaster of emotions throughout the 90 minutes for Pochettino, his team and the fans, Spurs supporters wouldn't want it any other way after one of the greatest night's in the club's long history.

The match was that special it now eclipses Liverpool's famous 4-3 win over Newcastle United back in April 1996 as the best game of football in England since the dawn of the Premier League in 1992.

Newcastle fans to this day are still have nightmares about that night on Merseyside as it proved so costly in their title quest.

As good as Liverpool's victory over Kevin Keegan's team was back in April 1996, it's now going to take something rather special to beat Wednesday night's thriller in Manchester.

You really witnessed something truly remarkable if you were inside the Etihad Stadium yesterday evening.

Spurs fans can now really start to believe.
