The niggling concern over Wales' four Rugby World Cup warm-up matches

Wales legend JPR Williams' comments about the four warm-up games were a hot topic on this week's Welsh Rugby Podcast.

As WalesOnline re-launched our rugby podcast ahead of the Rugby World Cup, our writers explored Williams' argument that Wales don't need as many as four warm-up matches before the tournament.

By and large, our boys pointing to the fact injuries are always a concern.

Here's what Mark Orders had to say...

It's a difficult one.

There's a balance to be struck between getting people game-hardened and not over exposing them in these matches.

It's really difficult. Gatland has been through this before and Wales have suffered injuries in previous campaigns and it's not his fault because you can't hide these players.

Listen to the full podcast below...

I do wonder whether or not Wales really do need to be playing four of these Test matches.

Then again, I can understand that perhaps they bring money in for the Welsh Rugby Union in these difficult times.

Also, it is an opportunity for Gatland to have a look at the squad.

I've still got this niggling concern in the back of my mind about injuries. We've had the best part of two, three, even four years to look at players.

So Gatland really ought to have an opinion now, I'm sure he has, about who he is going to put in his squad.

Here's what Matt Southcombe had to say...

I was covering the game four years ago at the Principality Stadium when Rhys Webb and Leigh Halfpenny were lost to Wales, both suffering serious injuries that ruled them out of the World Cup.

It was a horrible atmosphere in the stadium that day. In my five years and counting in the job, it was the worst experience I've had covering a game.

Players spend a lot of their time building up to this seven-week period we're about to encounter and for it to be snatched away at such a late stage is horrible.

So you have to have concerns. Do you really need four matches?

It's been three games in the past. There are benefits around the money they bring in but there's definitely a balance to be struck.

I'll be surprised if a few of the coaches are not watching these games through their fingers.

How often does Gatland really want to put his first choice XV in harms way between now and the opening game against Georgia?
