The Kansas City Chiefs had the entire bye week to watch the Houston Texans and prepare for Sunday’s AFC Divisional matchup at Arrowhead Stadium, and, well, maybe the bye week wasn’t too great after all?
In an absolutely shocking first 14 minutes of play, the Texans broke open a 21-0 lead (and eventually 24-0) thanks to a comedy of errors by the Chiefs.
Seriously, everything went wrong in the first quarter for Kansas City.
The Texans scored an opening-drive touchdown when Kenny Stills was left wide open. The Chiefs’ opening drive went three-and-out after Travis Kelce dropped a would-be first down. On the ensuing punt, Barkevious Mingo blocked Dustin Colquitt’s punt, and James Winchester had a walk-in touchdown.
It would get worse. After the Chiefs forced a Houston punt, they sent in speedy receiver Tyreek Hill to return — seeking a spark. Hill made an ill-advised decision to not call a fair catch, muffed the punt and Houston recovered at the six-yard line. Two plays later, it was 21-0.
The complete meltdown by Kansas City deservedly had NFL fans stunned. The Chiefs receivers had as many drops in the first quarter (4) as they had in the previous six games.
