The next step Marco Silva's solid Everton defence needs to take

We're riding our luck at times at the back, that has to be said.

This time last season Everton probably weren't getting the luck and we were conceding goals from set pieces far too often, but that's changed a lot.

We've sorted that particular set piece problem out, but our concentration levels in general still need to be higher. To be successful, you need to have those high concentration levels.

Jordan Pickford has got the defence out of the mire on a couple of occasions this season with some great saves - but having him in your goal is always a positive because he has that kind of ability.

He will mature with age and the more he plays and the more confident he gets. Sometimes he has been a bit erratic since joining the club, but that just shows him being keen to impress.

Last season, those half chances and set pieces we've faced this campaign were finding the back of the net - and we were finding it difficult to bounce back.

As a defender, even in keeping a clean sheet, you know you can work harder and stop the opposition creating more chances.

That will come with fitness levels as the season goes on but let's hope we keep this defensive form at Goodison, and away from home, going.

Over the last couple of seasons, the majority of my columns have been questioning the leadership at Everton on the pitch.

Seamus Coleman is a natural leader and very outspoken on the pitch and vocal with referees, but since last season Michael Keane has got back in form and really impressed me.

He's got Mina alongside him now and playing together might still be relatively new to them - but them keeping clean sheets is an added bonus to us all.

Concentration still needs to be 100% spot on to win matches, however. Marco Silva will be working on that, and the side still need to improve.

But, as a defender, it feels great to come off the pitch with a clean sheet - so they will be happy.
