The next Beeston Street Art mural has been revealed - and this one will be different

The next mural to be painted on a dreary wall to liven up Beeston town centre has been decided upon.

And it will mark a move away from the portraits that have so far gone up since Beeston Street Art made a splash last year.

After the well-received murals of notable locals such as fashion giant Sir Paul Smith, actor Richard Beckinsale and soul singer Edwin Starr, organisers submitted a number of ideas to Broxtowe Borough Council.

The late actor Richard Beckinsale, the late singer/songwriter Edwin Starr, and fashion designer Sir Paul Smith were spray painted by international street artist Zabou (Broxtowe Borough Council)

The winning proposal will be a landscape based on the meaning behind the name Beeston.

"It will be a nature themed landscape mural about Beeston - originally derived from 'Beos' meaning 'tall or bent grass' and 'Tun' meaning 'farm or settlement’," said Jeanie O'Shea from Beeston Street Art.

It will be created by Manchester artist Mural Life aka Qubek, who is behind the 'bees' mural in the shopping centre.

Said Jeanie: "I think it will add some much needed nature to a very bland and currently miserable urban spot; it will soften the ugly, dark, imposing structure and be a breath of fresh air."

The mural is expected to be completed by June.

"We were again overwhelmed by the quality of the submissions and want to assure all of the artists that not being chosen for this particular wall is not a reflection on the ideas or abilities," said Jeanie.

"It was just decided that this particular mural would best represent Beeston."

Organisers have decided to launch another Crowdfunder campaign to complete some of the submitted designs on private walls around the town.

She said: "We have only just begun to develop Beeston’s identity as a top UK destination for street art and want to bring many more varied works to town in 2019 and beyond."
