The Newport areas with some of the highest Covid rates in Wales

The number of coronavirus cases in Newport has risen in the past week according to the most recent data from Public Health Wales (PHW).

Six areas within the Newport area have reported new cases over the most recent seven-day period and the infection rate currently stands at 25.9 cases per 100,000 people.

This compares with the three areas reporting cases a week ago, on April 14, when the infection rate stood at 17.5 cases per 100,000 people.

The figures from PHW show that in the week between April 10 and April 16, a total of 26 new coronavirus cases were recorded in the following areas:

  • Pillgwenlly & Docks
  • Pye Corner & Graig
  • Bettws
  • Marshfield
  • St Julians & Barnardtown

What does this data mean?

The data above is based on the rolling seven-day average between April 3 and April 9. The boundaries used are those from the the Office for National Statistics' (ONS') middle layer super output areas (MSOAs) as defined by the 2011 boundaries.

It is important to bear in mind that it is very volatile because it covers such small areas. Where an area has a very small population even one positive case can push up the rate of cases per 100,000 significantly. You should therefore be cautious about drawing too many conclusions directly from the information.

The latest from Welsh Government

The Welsh Government announced on Monday night that six people (not including children under 11 years old or carers) can meet outdoors from Saturday, April 24, without a restriction on the number of households. The current rule states that six people from two households can meet outdoors.

In addition First Minister Mark Drakeford confirmed that outdoor hospitality can resume in Wales on Monday, April 26.

Dr Giri Shankar, incident director for the novel coronavirus outbreak response at Public Health Wales, said: "Public Health Wales recently published its latest surveillance report analysing Covid-19 vaccine uptake by sex, socioeconomic deprivation, and ethnic group.

"According to the findings inequality gaps in vaccine uptake of at least one dose of Covid-19 vaccine between ethnic and socioeconomic groups in older adults in Wales have narrowed since March but, despite this, significant inequalities still remain.

"On Friday the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) advised that pregnant women should be offered the Covid-19 vaccine at the same time as the rest of the population based on their age and clinical risk group. JCVI advice is followed in Wales.

"As there is more experience of the use of the Pfizer BioNTech and Moderna vaccines in pregnancy those vaccines are therefore the preferred vaccines to offer to pregnant women."
