The Newcastle United players walking a suspension tightrope in coming games

Jamaal Lascelles and Matt Ritchie need to get through the next eight matches without picking up a booking or they will face a one-match ban.

The current Premier League rules mean that players who get five yellow cards by the end of the 19th match of the season are banned for one match.

Players who get 10 yellow cards by the end of the 32nd match get a two-match ban. A player who gets 15 yellow cards by the end of the season gets a three-match ban.

There are eight matches to go until that 19th match cut-off, which means a few Newcastle United players need to start being very careful if they want to avoid being suspended.

Top of the pops when it comes to yellow cards are Jamaal Lascelles and Matt Ritchie, who have both already picked up four, meaning they need to get zero for the next eight games.

Isaac Hayden and striker Callum Wilson are also in the risky zone, both having picked up three so far. Hayden was the player who picked up the most yellow cards last season with eight, one more than the second-most, which was Jonjo Shelvey.

Then there is a host of players who have more room to play with, having been shown two yellow cards so far: Joelinton, Ciaran Clark, Javier Manquillo, Jacob Murphy, Fabian Schar and Shelvey.

The yellow cards handed out in the League Cup and FA Cup do not count towards the Premier League totals..
