The Newcastle restaurant that 'launders' its money every night

Staying safe: Star Anise restaurant owner Rowell Davidson.

Star Anise cafe owner Rowell Davidson isn't taking any chances. The Valentine cafe, which recently opened a second venue in Belmont, has been cleaning its cash since COVID-19 struck.

"We don't handle money any more," Davidson said. "We sanitise all our money. At end of the shift, everything gets washed - laundered. It's weird, it the times we live in.

"We came up with it ourselves. Wearing gloves is not practical. Now, customers put it in a bowl. We put it in a sanitised bucket with water, the cash we give them from our drawer has been sanitised the night before.

"It's really clean because it's been washed.

"It's an extra procedure at night time, but it's the times we live in."

Star Anise's Valentine location has stayed open right through the pandemic.
