The Newcastle 50-somethings rocking big hair and big dreams

Rock On: Hot Flush displaying their new hairdos, channelling the likes of Tina Turner, Suzi Quatro and Joan Jett.

A Newcastle glam rock band of 50-something women is bringing back the 1980s with its big hair and big attitudes.

Hot Flush will release its latest single and music video on Thursday.

The band will perform on the Today Show from the Gallipoli Legion Club in Hamilton, going on air around 8.50am.

The band comprises four best friends who refuse to let their rock'n'roll dreams die.

Preezie, Lozzie, Suzie and Jojo have been playing music for the past 30 years. They're all in their 50th or so orbit around the sun.

In a light-bulb moment, they realised that to achieve their dreams they simply had to have '80s style big hair.

Jojo knew her hair was a success when a low flying bird nested in it.

"If I can't fit a budgerigar in there, quite frankly I'm just not interested," she deadpanned.

As you can see from this picture, Hot Flush packs a serious attitude.

Their image and sound has been carefully sculpted, channelling the likes of Tina Turner, Suzi Quatro and Joan Jett.

To mark their new single, the band shared some "bewdy tips" with fans as part of the "Hot Flush Big Hair" competition.

They've invited fans to dress up at home and create their own big hairdos.

They can share photos and videos on Hot Flush social media in the categories of redhead mummas, brunette women, black-haired ravens and goldilocks.

The biggest and most badass hair in each category wins.

Hot Flush Bewdy Tips

Preezie: "One egg white applied to the face and decolletage an hour before hitting the hydraulic drum riser keeps me glowing under the searing stadium lights."

Suzie: "I recommend a mix of caraway seeds, whiskey, Guinness, Bailey's Irish Cream and a dash of cider poured liberally into your mouth. After a few, some will inevitably adhere to your face and produce a rich, sheer unguent you can sleep in."

Jojo: "The teasing comb is 'key' to my understated yet sizzling look. Don't forget to align your bass guitar with your base chakra to harness the planetary energy of big hair to your front fringe of fabulousness."

Lozzie: "For a subtle, refined look I just can't go past my BHP-endorsed metallic powder blue eyeshadow, Mum's vintage coral Avon lipstick, hot rollers and a barely there sweep of neon rouge."

Hot Flush's Genesis

One night, four musical friends got together for a meal at a harbourside restaurant. They talked about careers, children, divorces, politics and how much they wished they'd joined forces and rattled some musical cages before life got in the way.

As they raised their glasses in a toast to their friendship, a lightning bolt hit the water outside and it began to shimmer in an "electric, potent, powerful and magical moment".

In that moment, they pledged with a spontaneous but freakishly co-ordinated V rock symbol not to let age hold them back.

They vowed to fulfil their collective destinies to rock the world.

1980s Jokes

The first time I understood what '80s music was all about, it was an Aha moment.

A man with a gun entered a nightclub and threatened violence if the DJ didn't play classic '80s tunes. Luckily The Police turned up and sorted him out.

The band was playing cheesy '80s music. So I ran, I ran so far away.
