The New Zealand World Cup star with Welsh roots who was wearing a cow onesie hours before his late call-up

Receiving a call-up to the World Cup is one of the biggest moments of a rugby players life, if they ever achieve it.

So you don't expect to receive the news just hours after waltzing around in a cow onesie, naturally.

Yet that is exactly what happened to New Zealand star Shannon Frizell.

The five-cap All Black, who could have played for Wales thanks to his Swansea-born father Andrew, was training in a white cow-suit mere hours before he had the call to replace the injured Luke Jacobson in Japan.

“I always hoped for a call like this, and I got it,” a thrilled Frizell told reporters at Auckland airport late on Friday.

“I was surprised by it ... I was getting ready for bed and got a message, so I called him straight away, the manager. I couldn’t go to sleep until later.

“I called my mum straight away. I just said ‘I’m going to Japan today’ and she was just screaming.”

The reason behind the interesting choice of training attire was as part of a "Wear ya Onesie Sunday" promotion, urging fans to turn up in jump-suits for Tasman's match against North Harbour in the Mitre 10 Cup.

However, Frizell now won't be involved in that match -after the loose forward was chosen to replace Jacobson when the lock suffered delayed onset of concussion to rule him out of the tournament.
