Hot on the heels of a dozen new posters on Tuesday, a new trailer for xXx: The Return of Xander Cage was released on Wednesday.
First things first, there’s very little Deepika Padukone to be seen in this trailer. In fact, most of her shots here are from scenes we’ve already seen before. There is however, a twist of sorts that the trailer spoils. It seems like Deepika is part of some villainous group led by Donnie Yen and then switches sides midway. While that’s good news for Vin Diesel’s Xander Cage - he does want to ‘get the girl’ after all - it does leave the movie without any real villain for now.
Unless you count the ominous-looking satellite that is threatening to take over the world.
As we inch closer to the release, we notice that the film’s effects look more impressive than they ever have. And when a movie features ‘the good, the extreme, and the completely insane’ it’s always a great sign when even the most ridiculous stunts are pulled off with style.
But more than anything else, what this new trailer really manages to do is make xXx: The Return of Xander Cage look like a Fast & Furious spinoff. Now that the film looks mostly complete, and the cast’s roles are clearer, it’s not surprising that Vin Diesel chose to bring to this movie what makes the Furious series such fun. The action looks suitably ‘insane’ and the ensemble cast gives it a heist movie vibe.
The Return of Xander Cage is directed by DJ Caruso and also stars Ruby Rose, Nina Dobrev, Toni Collette, Tony Jaa and Samuel L Jackson for a January 20 release.
