The new X Factor trailer: cyborg Cheryl and a look inside Simon Cowell's mind

It’s all change at ITV’s tear-stained talent contest for its 12th series, which hits our screens in the autumn. Not only has there been the usual judge-reshuffle, with Nick Grimshaw and Rita Ora replacing Louis Walsh and Mel B, but there are also all-new presenters in Caroline Flack and Olly Murs – and a new announcer on the way following the departure of Peter Dickson.

Reflecting this bold new future for the show is a decidedly dystopian trailer, in which Murs and Flack have a nose round the “Secret X Factor Underground Base” – part Skynet, part Chinawhite – and encounter the horrors within, including armies of cyborg Cheryl Fernandez-Versinis and, most terrifyingly of all, a machine that lets you know what Simon Cowell is thinking about (boy bands, mainly). Meanwhile, just to show there are no hard feelings, Walsh turns up at the end for a quick cameo – though noticeably not in the same shot as his nemesis, Fernandez-Versini.
