The new world rugby rankings table that suggests Wales have the Rugby World Cup quarter-final opponents they want

The new world rugby rankings have been published following the completion of the Pool stages of the Rugby World Cup.

And it seems they are pretty much spot on with the top eight sides made up by the quarter-finalists at the tournament.

Host nation Japan occupy a record position of seventh in the rankings after climbing again, while Wales remain second behind favourites New Zealand.

Wales' quarter-final opponents France are the lowest ranked of the last eight heading into the knockout stages.

England are third and Ireland fourth, with South Africa and Australia making up the rest.

You can see the quarter-final fixtures and how each team is currently rated here.

The rankings table is worked out on a points exchange system between the two competing sides in each match, with Rugby World Cup matches counting double. This article explains exactly how they are worked out.
