As real life retreats away from manual labour and towards the keyboard, there has been a fetishisation of workwear garments in fashion. The utilitarian trend has become a regular fixture on the catwalk, from boiler suits to fisherman aping chic through to military-inspired jackets in camo and safari prints.
It makes sense that as emoji are becoming more “woke” and – as well as righting some gender imbalance wrongs – they are also upping their garment game. Currently, we have the red flamenco dress from the dancing emoji lady, a couple of uninspiring shirts, trousers, a turquoise Classic Dame 50s dress, and our favourite piece: an amber kimono, which we use way too much. Well now, it has been announced there are 11 new professional, female emojis, which means 11 workwear outfits.
As well as teacher and farmer, our favourites include the office worker wearing a button-up shirt styled in a Joseph-esque way, a welder wearing a Sacai-like boilersuit and holding a soldering iron (very Jennifer Beals in Flashdance) and the scientist in a white lab coat that is very in the spirit of the robe dressing trend seen in the collections of Balenciaga. #Emojifashion has come of age.
