The new Wigan store where struggling families can do a big shop for just £3

Struggling families in Wigan will soon be able to do a large food shop for just £3.

Following the success of their flagship store in Wythenshawe, charity The Message Trust will open the 'Edge Community Grocery' shop in Wigan town centre next month.

Inside the store, which will be located at The Edge, shoppers will find fresh fruit and vegetables, tinned goods, baked items, frozen food, sanitary products and household items.

The produce is donated by local suppliers and supermarkets - some are donated because of packaging errors, while other items are nearing their use-by date.

Shoppers can visit twice per week, at a cost of £3 per visit and The Message Trust estimate that an average family will save up to £40 per shop.

Chief executive and founder of The Message Trust, Andy Hawthorne said: "Since the first lockdown we've seen how hard the impact of Covid-19 has been on people and families.

"So many are now struggling to afford their weekly shop. We couldn’t stand by and do nothing.

"Community Groceries are all about bridging the gap between supermarkets and foodbanks, making it easier for our members to put food on the table, whilst also providing them with support and courses too.

"We can’t wait to welcome people to the new The Edge Community Grocery from the start of March."

Membership costs £5 per year and is reserved for local residents who are struggling with the financial impact of Covid-19.

Members will also have access to a range of services including employment clubs, debt advice, mental wellbeing courses, exploring Christianity and cookery courses.

The store will open on March 1.
