The new 'virtual' High Street which could be lifeline for small businesses

A ‘virtual High Street’ could be launched in Nailsea in a bid to boost trade for businesses and help shoppers.

Nailsea Community Group has put forward the idea of launching the scheme to help traders and bring the High Street into people's homes.

The virtual High Street would have its own webpage where local businesses would be asked to feature.

Each business would upload details of the stock or services it offers to the site with people being able to order online direct with the company for collection or delivery.

Businesses would be charged a surcharge of 1.5 per cent for every sale made with the proceeds going to the website providers.

The idea follows the launch of a similar scheme in Bristol called WeAreBS3 where local businesses in Bedminster have set up a virtual High Street.

Nailsea Community Group chairman James Steele said: “A similar scheme has been launched in Bedminster and we thought it was something that may work in Nailsea.

“As well as bringing the High Street into peoples’ homes it will also help drive forward a shop local mentality.

“It is only an idea at the moment and we have put the scheme forward to the local businesses, residents and the town council to get their feedback.”

The town council is due to discuss the idea at its meeting next month.
