The new 'sustainable' steak restaurant coming to Cardiff

A high-end steak restaurant with a "vision of bringing the world's best steak to the UK" is set to open its doors in Cardiff. Gaucho has restaurants across London, Leeds, Manchester, and Birmingham and is now set to open its first Welsh branch on The Hayes in Cardiff.

The restaurant is set to open on the current site of the All Saints shop on The Hayes according to a now-approved planning application to Cardiff Council. The restaurant, which sells 'carbon neutral beef and Argentinian wine,' opened up its first spot in London in 1994 and says it takes its inspiration from Argentina, with the beef served at Gaucho coming from "premium Black-Angus cattle bred at hand-selected farms." The restaurant already has 20 restaurants, 12 of which are in London.

Gaucho serves a range of menus across its restaurants, with brunch, sharing, and Sunday roast menus being available alongside its a la carte and lunch options. Priding itself on its commitment to having a "positive impact" on the planet, the restaurant group has undertaken a project with with the Carbon Group and their supplier to gather carbon emission data.

The data collected measure carbon emissions from the cattle farms supplying the restaurants up to the delivery of the meat, which Gaucho says enables them to "begin the process of offsetting and developing long-term strategies for reducing emissions at source." The restaurant launched the 'Sustainable Steak Movement' last year in alignment of COP 26, alongside the 'Buenos Aires' and 'M' restaurant groups. The movement's manifesto aims to exclusively offer a 'carbon neutral' beef option on menus by 2025 and, by 2030, aims to be converting restaurants to become 'net zero venues'.

Gaucho's menu includes a variety of steak options, offering its own speciality spiral cut steaks and large sharing steaks alongside the classic rib eye, sirloin, fillet, and rump cuts. It's a la carte menu includes dishes that go beyond the restaurant's steak options, such as pork matambre and whole grilled seabass.

The restaurant is set to open on the current site of the All Saints shop on The Hayes according to a now-approved. planning application to Cardiff Council. Around 80 staff would be employed at the new venue, which will trade from 9am through to 11.30pm Monday to Thursday, 9am to midnight on Friday and Saturday and 9am to 10.30pm on Sundays.
