The new primary school with rooftop play area being planned in Butetown, Cardiff

Plans for a new primary school in Butetown have been revealed.

The new building would replace the current St Mary the Virgin CIW Primary School and would have space for 420 pupils.

The new school, in Bute Street, would also be able to support 20 pupils with additional learning needs, have a 48-place nursery, and a 24-place Flying Start provision.

It would be built alongside St Mary the Virgin Church, on green land which the council says is fenced off from the public due to high levels of antisocial behaviour.

The plans for the new school (Cardiff council)

Cardiff council has submitted a planning application for the new school, which would employ up to 60 full-time staff.

The new school building would see St Mary the Virgin primary expand from one to two forms of entry and provide an additional 30 English medium places at reception.

The council said people in Butetown would be able to use the halls, kitchen, toilets and changing rooms and a community room at the school.

There would also be a rooftop play area providing "an exciting, attractive and safe outdoor space for the children"

A council statement said: "Bringing this site back into positive use and ensuring St Mary the Virgin Primary School has a strong visual presence on Bute Street alongside its church aims to bring a sense of pride for the Butetown community."
