The new measures expected in Ireland as Government and NPHET plan to stop Covid surge

Vaccine passes are expected to be needed for access to gyms, hairdressers and barbers, under plans going to Cabinet on Tuesday.

It comes after NPHET told the Government the system should be expanded to areas other than hospitality.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan had already said he “would be in favour” of their use in hairdressers and in gyms.

It’s understood the Government is considering the use of vaccine certs in these sectors but consultation will also be needed with the industries.

There was also discussion at the Cabinet sub-committee meeting on Covid-19 that the Defence Forces could be deployed to help speed up the number of people getting their booster jab.

NIAC are expected to give the green light to booster shots for people aged in their 50s and for people with underlying health conditions younger than 50 on Monday night.

An antigen test system is also expected to be rolled out in schools while the rapid tests are to be made more affordable for the population.

The Cabinet sub-committee meeting on Covid-19 also agreed that there is a need for stricter rules around mask wearing for both indoor and outdoor events.

A senior source said the priority was “to keep schools open, the economy and to protect public health.”
