The new-look Swansea City XI which could play in FA Cup against Southampton as Liverpool youngster finally gets his chance

It's been nearly a month since Swansea City were last in action, but Russell Martin's side are, Covid permitting, set to resume their season in the FA Cup this weekend.

The Swans are due to take on Premier League side Southampton at the Swansea.com Stadium on Saturday, and it remains to be seen what sort of side Martin will go with.

After such a long lay-off, he may well feel like this is a good opportunity to bring his first team stars back up to speed, ahead of what promises to be a hectic second half of the season

However, it may also be seen as the ideal chance to give some of the fringe members of the squad some first-team minutes.

It's really anyone's guess (have we mentioned the effects of Covid?) but if everyone's fit, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Martin mix things up a little.

After being usurped as number one by Ben Hamer, Steven Benda may well be handed a place in goal, although young Lewis Webb may feel like he has a good chance of being included.

With the Swans keen on MK Dons goalkeeper Andy Fisher, there are big question marks over Benda's future in South Wales, but he might perhaps get one last chance to perform in front of the Jack Army.

At the back, it perhaps wouldn't be a surprise to see the Swans going with a flat back five against Premier League opposition, particularly in light of Ethan Laird's departure - although one wonders if Laird would have been risked for this game, anyway.

Kyle Naughton may well come in at right-back, while Jake Bidwell may get a chance to shine on the left.

The only real doubt over Bidwell would likely be the risk of injury, with the full-back one of those that could be sold in this window.

In the middle, it would be great to see young Brandon Cooper get a chance to shine, while Rhys Williams will surely be chomping at the bit to prove a point given his lack of game time this season.

That's assuming Williams isn't recalled by Liverpool, of course, which remains a possibility, with the Reds believed to be concerned by his lack of first team minutes.

Joel Latibeaudiere is highly likely to be included too, although it's understood that he too may well depart before the end of the month, with a loan move mooted as a real possibility later in the window.

In midfield, Matt Grimes may well be rested, with the likes of Flynn Downes and Jay Fulton among those that could be considered.

Fulton may not be risked due to a possible sale this month, with Nottingham Forest keen admirers, meaning Martin may well turn to Korey Smith and Liam Walsh.

While he's another that could well be offloaded in January, Yan Dhanda may yet get the nod in midfield, behind a front two of Michael Obafemi and Liam Cullen , both of whom will feel they have a point to prove.

Obafemi, in particular, will be keen on firing the Swans to a giant-killing win over his former club.

Possible line-up in full: Benda; Naughton, Cooper, Williams, Latibeaudiere, Bidwell; Smith, Walsh; Dhanda; Obafemi, Cullen
