The New Look Explores WWII Struggles Of Fashion Icons.

Chanel Fashion House (1)

The New Look marks Todd A. Kessler's debut series for Apple TV+ and his first solo project in years, departing from his previous collaborations with Glenn and Daniel Zelman. Teaming up with Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, the series delves into the lives of iconic French fashion designers during World War II, particularly focusing on Christian Dior and Coco Chanel.

The show's title, inspired by Harper's Bazaar editor Carmel Snow's description of Dior's 1947 collection, reflects the essence of the narrative. Kessler and Di Bonaventura expressed enthusiasm for their collaboration, aiming for a grander scale than their previous works.

Reuniting with past colleagues like Ben Mendelsohn and Glenn Close, Kessler brought a stellar cast together for The New Look. Mendelsohn, who plays Dior, found the experience distinct from his previous work, emphasizing the Kesslers' creative process.

The series' initial episodes focus on the designers' wartime struggles, portraying Dior's trauma and Chanel's controversial interactions with Nazis. Kessler explains the deliberate choice to set the foundation in this period, shaping the characters' future trajectories.

Juliette Binoche, embodying Chanel, delved deep into the character's psyche, seeking to humanize her complex decisions. Extensive research and immersive experiences were pivotal for both Binoche and Kessler in understanding and portraying their characters authentically.

Kessler's meticulous seven-year study of Dior, aided by expert guidance, ensured a comprehensive portrayal of the designer's world. Mendelsohn's portrayal of Dior took an interpretative approach, capturing the essence rather than a mere imitation.

The New Look promises a captivating exploration of fashion history intertwined with the tumultuous backdrop of World War II, offering viewers a thought-provoking narrative that delves into the personal and professional struggles of these legendary designers.
