The new coronavirus symptoms scientists believe are linked to the Delta variant

Researchers believe that these new symptoms could indicate Covid infection in the UK with the Delta variant, the BBC reports.

Professor Tim Spector, who runs the Zoe Covid Symptom study, said people who contract the Delta variant can feel "more like a bad cold" for younger people.

Although they may not feel very ill, they could be contagious and putting others at risk unwittingly.

Anyone who thinks they have coronavirus is urged to take a test.

According to the NHS website, the classic symptoms for coronavirus are:

  • a new continious cough
  • fever
  • loss of sense of taste or smell

But Prof Spector says these are becoming less common based on the data that's been collated by the Zoe team, after receiving thousands of symptom logs.

"Since the start of May, we've been looking at the top symptoms in the app users - and they are not the same as they were", he explains.

The change seems linked to the rise in the Delta variant which now accounts for 91 per cent of cases in the UK.

Fever remains quite common, but Prof Spector said loss of smell is no longer in the top 10 reported symptoms as "the variant seems to be working slightly differently".

Scientists are concerned if people think they've got a seasonal cold and go out to parties they might spread it and scientists think "this is fuelling the problem."

He urged anyone with a bad cold or funny 'off' feeling to stay home and do a test.

Furthermore, the React study of a million people in England by Imperial College London found a range of additional symptoms associated with Covid.

Chills, loss of appetite, headache and muscle aches were strongly linked to infection alongside the original classic symptoms.
