The new Banksy in Barton Hill has already been vandalised

The new Banksy in Barton Hill has already been vandalised - two days after it appeared.

Banksy confirmed the new piece of street art was his work at midnight - the start of Valentine's Day - on his official Instagram account and his website.

A day later, Banksy's latest work in Bristol has already been defaced, with someone writing "BCC w*****s" and a poorly drawn heart in pink over it.

The artwork shows a young child using a slingshot to create what appears to be a firework formed of rose petals, playing with the themes of violence and innoncence.

UPDATE: Banksy says he's 'glad' Barton Hill piece got vandalised

This piece joins Banksy's other array of famous graffiti pieces throughout Bristol, including The Mild Mild West, Gorilla in a Pink Mask and Well Hung Lover.

Dan Voke spotted the fact the piece of street art had been vandalised on his way to work at around 7.30am on Saturday morning (Feb 15).

The plastic sheet which had been placed over the Banksy to protect it had also been removed, he continued.

Mr Voke, from Bath, said: "It was a bit of a shock to see it has been vandalised already.

"Banksy is quite a prolific artist and, for someone to be this mindless, it seems a bit silly."

Mr Voke lives in Bath but works in Bristol so he drives through the area on his way to work as it is the best route for him, adding he first saw the street art earlier this week when it still wasn't confirmed it was a Banksy.

"It really is a shame," the 24-year-old added. "I was a bit disheartened when I saw it.

"People were saying how it was going to be good for the area, bringing people in, and people are still going to come look at it, but it is upsetting."

Mr Voke said it made him angry as Banksy hadn't done any work in the city for some time.

"I absolutely love Banksy, I think he is a brilliant artist," he continued. "You spot his work when walking around Bristol and that is nice.

"I would just say to, whoever has done it, just do not do it again - you have been given something nice and you have ruined it for everyone, which is a bit silly."

The work is expected to bring increased visitors and tourists to the Barton Hill area of Bristol, as people from around the world continue to visit the city where Banksy is from and where so many of his graffiti pieces are on display.

A man from Barton Hill was overjoyed when he woke up on his birthday to find the new Banksy on his house.

Edwin Simons, 67, has owned the Marsh Street building for 15 years - although he rents it out as three flats.
