The new £20 note is released today - here's what you need to know

The new Bank of England £20 note has officially been released today after being unveiled back in October last year.

English Romantic painter JMW Turner is the face of the note, which also features a print of his painting The Fighting Temeraire.

The words 'Light is therefore colour', a quote from a lecture Turner gave in 1818, can be found towards bottom right corner of his portrait.

Manchester Evening News reports that the note is made from the flexible plastic material polymer and will be smaller than the old £20, measuring 139mm x 73m.

It will also feature a round, purple foil patch containing the letter ‘T’, see-through windows and hologram transitioning between ‘Twenty’ and ‘Pounds’ when titled.

There will also be three clusters of raised dots to help blind and partially-sighted people identify the note's value.

While it enters circulation from today (February 20), you can still use old £20 notes until the Bank of England confirms an official withdrawal date.

There will be a six-month notice period between the old note gets withdrawn but the quickest way to exchange old notes is to deposit them with your bank.
