The Netherlands explains why Wales fans are banned from Amsterdam for Euro 2020 knockout clash but Denmark fans aren't

The Dutch government has confirmed that Wales fans hoping to attend the last 16 knockout clash against Denmark in Amsterdam are banned from entering the country.

But a spokesperson told WalesOnline that the ban does not apply to Danish fans, because Denmark is part of the European Union (EU).

In the Netherlands there is an entry ban in effect for people outside of the EU or Schengen area. This means you can only travel to the Netherlands if the purpose of your trip falls under an exempt reason, or if you are travelling from a country where the risk of Covid is low. The Dutch government said Wales football fans do not adhere to either criteria.

On Tuesday, director of Denmark’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Citizen Service, Erik Brogger, told a press conference that Danish fans could avoid quarantine in the Netherlands if they entered and left the country within 12 hours, and the Dutch government has confirmed Danish fans are allowed in the stadium on Saturday.

The Danish authorities said fans could travel if they present a negative PCR test that is a maximum of 72 hours old. They must go into isolation for 10 days - but with the opportunity to test themselves out of it on day five - and bring a quarantine certificate that shows where they want to stay in isolation.

A spokesman for the Dutch Ministry of Health said: “Unfortunately, there is an entry ban in effect for people outside the EU/Schengen area. Unless people fall into one of the exemption categories, fans cannot enter the Netherlands. There is no exemption for supporters.

“Because Denmark is within the EU, supporters can enter the Netherlands. However, they have to stick to the rules regarding quarantine and testing, as can be found on our website. The Dutch authorities strongly support the Danish and Welsh statements [for fans] to stay home and watch the game in their own countries.”

Wales fans were told on Monday by the Welsh government that they were banned from the fixture. Wales' health minister Eluned Morgan said police in Amsterdam would not be "letting Welsh fans into the country".

"We have had some guidance from the police in Amsterdam who have told us that they will not be letting Welsh fans into the country," Baroness Morgan told a press briefing. "And so that means that we would encourage you of course to stay here and watch the matches carefully.

"If local authorities come forward and ask us for the setting up of fan zones, then of course we will as a government consider that and publish guidelines for how that could be done in a safe way."
