Based on film alone, Alabama’s Jonah Williams is probably the best offensive tackle prospect in the 2019 NFL draft, but some scouts are worried that he doesn’t have long enough arms to make it as a starter.
During his college career, Williams proved he didn’t need long arms to dominate opposing pass rushers. All he needed was his strength, sound technique and Microsoft Excel, of course.
That’s right. Williams uses Excel to help aid his scouting of opposing pass rushers and the data he tracks is rather expansive. Luckily, Williams shared his spreadsheets with Pro Football Focus analyst Austin Gayle.
My question: Does Alabama not have staff members tracking this data for him? At the NFL level, he’ll get reports like this upon request, but maybe Williams likes his own personal style of scouting. It did work for him during his time in Tuscaloosa, so we can’t blame him.
Williams is projected to go at the top of the first round. If NFL teams ignore the arm length concern, he should be the first tackle off the board. At worst, he’ll fall to Carolina at pick 16. A Microsoft Office endorsement deal should soon follow
