The Neil Lennon Celtic statistic that lays bare startling change from Brendan Rodgers era

After Neil Lennon was appointed as caretaker manager of Celtic, he made clear that he was looking to change the style imposed by his predecessor Brendan Rodgers .

Rodgers is known for the patient, possession-based approach he had previously looked to implement at both Swansea and Liverpool, and which he is now using to good effect at Leicester City .

When Lennon was appointed though he was keen to get the ball forward more quickly, as well as asking his players to send in more crosses.

Speaking after the win over Rangers in April he said: "It’s a style of play that they are used to and it’s a different style of play from what I’ve been used to.

"However, it works and you can’t change it overnight, anyway.

"There are adjustments that you have to make to the staff, the training structure, the players and the mentality of the players."

The Irishman was eventually appointed to the job permanently, and with a pre-season to work on his approach and signings to suit his style, the difference in approach is clear.

In the Premiership last season Celtic averaged 68.81 per cent of possession per game, but so far this season that has dropped to just 59.9 per cent.

That's a marked contrast to last season under Rodgers, and the average number of passes has dropped too.

Last season the Hoops averaged 628 per game, but under Lennon this season that figure stands at 492.

As might be expected the number of lateral and backward passes has also dropped.

Last season Celtic passed the ball backward an average of 90 times per game, and sideways 265 times. So far this season those numbers have dropped to 65 and 185 respectively.

Title rivals Rangers, meanwhile, appear to be adopting more of a possession-based approach this season, with their average of 67.7 per cent per game leaving them second in Europe.

Last season Steven Gerrard's men averaged 59.56 per cent.
