For many athletes, playing against the best of the best in the country in NCAA tournaments will be the highlight of their athletic careers.
For many of the women participating in the NCAA’s women’s golf regional tournament in Baton Rouge, that’s exactly what that moment was going to be. A chance for them to accomplish something at the highest possible level they could.
And now, for many of those same women, that dream is over.
The NCAA canceled the regional unexpectedly on Wednesday, sparking outrage among the golfers and coaches competing.
NCAA committee rep Brad Hurlbut announced to players at the course that the course was “playable but not championship-level playable” because of rain and standing water on the course from a storm that passed through, per Golfweek.
The top six seeded teams were able to advance in the tournament along with the top 3 individual golfers not on those teams, but that was it. And just like that, a number of golfer’s careers were over.
Clearly, there were lots of people upset by this. And it left people with lots of questions. Here’s how it all went down.
