The National Trust is reopening North East car parks this week

The National Trust has reopened car parks in the North East so that the public has more access to green spaces.

The region's larger car parks will reopen from Thursday, May 21 to visitors who pre-book their space, while a handful of car parks are open Monday, May 18.

Visitors can find their local National Trust green space on the website here to check if its car park is reopening this week and members who pre-book can park free.

Allen Banks and Staward Gorge in Northumberland, Embleton and Newton Links in Alnwick, Dunstanburgh Castle, Hadrians Wall and the Durham Coast are some of the sites currently listed as open or partially open today, but the National Trust advises anybody to check and book online before visiting.

Recently a number of its smaller car parks reopened in line with Government advice, and following its success the larger ones will now open just days later.

The reopening of some larger car parks will only take place in England while the First Minister in Wales and the Northern Ireland Executive reiterate the 'stay at home' message, so all car parks in Wales and Northern Ireland will remain closed.

National Trust has also added: "Sadly, for the time being our pay-for-entry places, including houses and gardens, will need to remain closed, due to the latest government guidance restricting the public’s use of outdoor ticketed venues.

"When we get the chance to reopen any pay-for entry places it will be phased and gradual to ensure that we protect any local communities from being overwhelmed. In order to maintain social distancing when they reopen, we plan to introduce a pre-booking system."
