'The Nation' to axe print edition

The Nation, a newspaper that has served the English-speaking community in Thailand for half a century, will terminate its print edition next month due to mounting financial problems, according to a source who works for the group.

Nation Group has not made any announcement but the plan is said to have been discussed among its executives, the source said yesterday.

"The last paper is likely to be [published] on June 28," the man said.

The company will continue in the media business but devote its resources to its online platform, which will be operated by its current team of news professionals, he added.

He said staff were to meet tomorrow to discuss details.

"Finally, we are entering the 'Last Chapter' of a 48-year era," the paper's business editor, Kwanchai Rungfapaisarn, said in a Facebook post.

The Nation's managing editor Supalak Ganjanakhundee posted a message on his Facebook account earlier preparing staff for a "hard landing''.
