The nation's favourite pasta shape has been revealed - and Twitter users are not happy

We are - without a doubt - a nation of carb lovers.

And top of the list for many UK foodies is pasta, from cheesy pasta bakes and creamy carbonaras to a classic spag bol or a meaty lasagne - we can’t seem to get enough of the stuff.

And it’s not just a comfort food we enjoy at home.

For birthdays, romantic dinners or a night out with friends - pasta from a proper Italian restaurant is a top choice for celebrations and special occasions.

But while we all know our favourite pasta dish - do you have any preference on shape?

Penne, linguine, spaghetti, tagliatelle, vermicelli, fusilli, macaroni and rigatoni are just some of the extensive list of pasta shapes available.

But what is the nation’s favourite?

According to research conducted by YouGov, spirals and spag top the list.

Twisting fusilli takes the number one spot with 19% of British adults choosing the pasta shape as their favourite and spaghetti following closely behind being selected as the UK’s second favourite with 15% of the votes.

Penne comes in third place with 11% of the votes, followed by tagliatelle in fourth place with 10%, and tortellini and conchiglie (shells) in fifth place with a matching 7%.

And taking the last spot are farfalle (bows) and macaroni with 4% of the votes each.

YouGov shared the findings on Twitter and social media but social media users were explosive in their disagreement with line-up.

One passionate pasta enthusiast tweeted: “Ok.

“1 - WHY IS TAGLIATELLE EVEN AN OPTION

“2 - Don't even speak to me about tortellini

“3 - Farfalle is clearly the superior short pasta

“4 - Spaghetti should be the ONLY long pasta.”

Another had a problem with spaghetti taking the number two spot, writing: “Spaghetti is objectively rubbish.

“Couldn't design a better sauce spraying machine.”

And to sum up the whole selection, one Twitter user commented: “Fusilli is fine, spaghetti is inconvenient, penne is pointless, tagliatelle is as inconvenient as spaghetti but substantial enough to be worth it, tortellini is awesome, conchiglie is the best, farfalle is garbage, macaroni is sauce thickener.”
