The Naked Bike Ride is coming back to Cardiff

"If you can see me naked, why can't you see me when I'm clothed?"

That's the message that'll be spread around Cardiff as a large group of cyclists plan to pedal the streets of the Welsh capital - totally starkers .

Back for its 12th year, the World Naked Bike Ride is officially returning to Cardiff for 2019, and a provisional date has been revealed.

The sea of naked bodies on bikes will travel from one part of the city to another and back again - but it's all for a good cause.

The events, which take place around the world, started in 2004 - and the Cardiff rides have been going since 2007.

London and Brighton currently attract the most UK riders with more than 1000 cyclists taking part in each, while the US city of Portland, Oregon attracts around 8,000 riders.

Where and when is it?

This year, cyclists will meet at Cardiff University, on the university lawns on Museum Avenue (opposite Alexandra Gardens).

From 12.30pm bikes and bodies will be decorated, before departing at 2.30pm.

A provisional date of Saturday, June 8 has been penned in the diary, while organisers wait for approval from the police.

The route is slightly different to last year but mostly the same - it will take in roughly 8.5 miles through Cardiff city centre and Pontcanna Fields.

And full nudity is not compulsory - the dress code is "as bare as you dare" -  meaning costumes, painted skin, mankinis, monokinis, bikinis, and birthday suits all welcome.

What's it all about?

It's not just an excuse to pedal around the city in your birthday suit - there's actually a good cause behind the event.

Cyclists take to the roads without their clothes in a bid to help raise awareness about road safety - specifically for those using bikes.

The idea behind the ride is to make sure drivers keep an eye out for those on bikes - if motorists can see cyclists when they're not wearing clothes, they should be able to see them any other time.

The second is to challenge the over reliance on fossil fuels and their impact on global warming.

What happened last year?

Naked Bike Ride

Last year, despite the drizzle, around 120 cyclists left the National Museum Cardiff at 12.30pm headed down to Cardiff Bay and back again.

At the 2018 event, Dee Jenkins, one of the Cardiff organisers who has been involved in the event for six years, said: "The Cardiff World Naked Bike Ride is a campaign, a protest and a celebration.

"Much of what we do is to highlight how vulnerable you are when you're riding a bike. Our message is 'if you can see me naked, why can't you see me when I'm clothed'."
