The myths about Man City this season that need debunking

Manchester City are nearly a third of the way into what looks like another promising season.

Pep Guardiola's side have begun the defence of their Premier League title well, sitting just three points off leaders Chelsea having travelled to nearly all of the top ten already. And while West Ham ended their long domination of the Carabao Cup, the Blues have shrugged off defeat in Paris to sit top of their Champions League group with two games to play.

The positives are encouraging after a summer transfer window where City failed to strengthen as they wanted to, but there have also been a few misconceptions of the team so far this season where certain situations have been misunderstood.

Here is an attempt to debunk some of the myths around Guardiola's side that keep cropping up.

'City wanted to sell Bernardo'

Bernardo Silva has turned in a terrific performance more often than not this season, more often than not prompting an observation from someone who hasn't followed the team closely about the club wanting to sell the player this summer.

The insinuation is that City must have been out of their minds in summer and have got lucky to keep hold of such a terrific player.

The truth is that, as with any player, Guardiola does not want to stand in their way if they want to leave - as long as the club gets a good enough proposal from the buyer. City didn't want to let Bernardo go but were willing to sanction his wish if they were given an acceptable offer. None came in and the Portugal international stayed.

It is also worth pointing out that the consistency of form he has produced since staying had not been present over the last two seasons.

'Rodri should have started the Champions League final'

Another player in fine form this season has been Rodri. Indeed, so good has the holding midfielder been, particularly in recent weeks, that the narrative is building that he should have started the Champions League final.

It is pretty indisputable that Guardiola should have stuck with the shape that City had built their success on and that his tactical gamble did not work against Chelsea. At the same time, Rodri had made enough mistakes in the knockout rounds that he had already lost his place to Fernandinho for the semi-final against PSG.

Rodri is currently in much better form than he was back in April or May, so while his current self walks into the starting XI for every important game that was not the case at the time. It is also possible that not being picked has spurred the player on to improve.

Guardiola will never live down his decision not to start a holding midfielder, but it won't specifically be Rodri that is remembered.

'City are boring to watch'

City developed this reputation under Guardiola as they won more and more, with opponents either unable to get the ball off them or too busy packing their penalty area with 11 bodies to even attempt to play football.

The derby on Saturday showed that some of City's fixtures can lack as a contest. Surprisingly too, City are the lowest scorers in the top four this season after failing to land a striker in the summer window.

However, Guardiola's side have shown that they still provide some of the best entertainment in the league.

The wins over United and Chelsea have been better value than most meetings between the big sides, some of the team goals they have scored have been a joy to watch and when Liverpool went at them at Anfield in a game of equals it was one of the games of the season so far if not the best.
