The mystery propeller that's washed up near Barry

A mystery propeller has been spotted in the sea between Barry Island and Bendricks Rock.

The propeller, photographed by John Milbank, is thought to date back to World War 2 but this hasn't been confirmed. Mr Milbank, 55, said it could possibly be even older. He often visits the spot and believes it could be from a ship.

He said he knew the propeller was there, but had never really seen it properly before because the tide had to be low for it to be visible.

"It's been there for a long time," said Mr Milbank, from Mountain Ash .

"I would think it's probably about 70 years old by the look of it. I'd be really interested to see what it is. It's probably from a really big ship.

"More people must have come across it."

Since posting images of the propeller on Twitter, he said he'd received a lot of interest about where it could have come from.

He explained that if you travel on Hayes Road from Sully you come to a roundabout, and need to go up to the industrial estate to walk down the area of nearby beach to be in with a chance of seeing the propeller.

"I knew it was there because I usually walk along that area," he added.

"But there has to be a low tide to see it."

He said he was intrigued to know more about its history.

When asked if he thought it could be linked to World War 2, he replied: "I should think it was from then or before that time.

"It's quite deteriorated but, having looked at it, I would say it's about 70 or 80 years old.

"I may be wrong.

"I would love to know where it came from."
