The mystery of the Swansea woman who spent her 21st birthday with a man from London then vanished

James Gilman spent a day in 1955 strolling about Swansea and Mumbles with a local girl who'd invited him to celebrate her 21st birthday with him.

Then, with barely a proper goodbye, she disappeared.

Since that day 66 years ago, and a short meeting in London a couple of months later, James has not seen or heard from Rhona Harrison. Now, at the age of 89 and living in Durham, he wants to track her down and finally solve a puzzle that has been in the back of his mind ever since they spent time together.

James first met Rhona at a dance at Chelsea Town Hall in London, back in 1955 when he was just 23-years-old and working as an assistant sales manager in the English capital.

The pair exchanged phone numbers and just weeks later he was invited to Ms Harrison's home, which is believed to have been in the Mayhill area of Swansea, to celebrate her 21st birthday, where they walked around the city centre and along Mumbles seafront.

Two months later she made the trip to London and after a walk in Hyde Park, Ms Harrison said that she was moving to Germany to work for the British Army and they never saw each other again.

How Mr Gilman looked around the time he met Ms Harrison in London (James Gilman)

"We met at a dance in Chelsea Town Hall and I walked her and her friend back to the Marble Arch hotel where they were staying and we exchanged phone numbers," he said. "A couple of weeks later she contacted me to invite me to her 21st birthday celebrations in Swansea on October 24.

"I did come down to Swansea for her birthday, staying at her family's home, at which time she was working at the old Swansea fire station. We went for a walk around the town and Rhona showed me the fire station and that evening we spent walking on the Mumbles seafront, and then I took the overnight coach back to London.

"That December Rhona came up to London again, we walked in Hyde Park, and she told me she was off to Germany in the New Year to work for the British Army's NAAFI organisation. I never saw her again."

Mr Gilman went on to train to become a teacher and met his wife during his training. The pair were married for 55 years and shared four children and three grandchildren.

However, he explained that the encounters with Ms Harrison had always left him feeling "puzzled" and that he would love to be put in contact with her or anyone that knew her.

He added: "The whole episode has left me puzzled over the years. In those days your 21st birthday was the most significant of your life yet I saw no sign of birthday cards or presents in Rhona's house, met none of her friends, and there was no birthday party or celebration such as you always expected on your 21st.

"I would love to contact Rhona again to find the answer to this puzzle."
