The mystery of bizarre Jonjo Shelvey banner flown over Newcastle United last game solved

The mystery of the bizarre banners that have been flown over Newcastle United’s last two games has been solved.

A plane bearing the message “Jonjo Ready for Beermunch” flew over St James’ Park twice before kick off on Saturday – a week after a plane flew over Anfield with the message “Jurgen Ready for Beermunch”.

Fans were left scratching their heads at the message on Saturday but after a few phone calls and a couple of Google searches, we’ve established it was an attempt to generate some buzz for a new line of snacks aimed at craft beer drinkers.

Beermunch – for that was the brand being promoted – has been launched in the UK by US firm Brew City and is a new nine-product frozen range of hot bites that’s now in supermarkets.

United’s last two games were televised so the company was hoping to raise the profile of the brand. A Brew City spokesman said: “We chose Jonjo Shelvey’s name as we thought he’d be the sort of player who would enjoy these. We thought we could get the word out there ahead of the UK launch.”
