The 'mystery' Jurgen Klopp signing Liverpool fans want to see - but the clock is ticking

Recent history suggests scoring the final goal in a 4-0 win over Barcelona can seriously bolster a Liverpool career.

But while Divock Origi continues to revel in his subsequent Champions League achievements, progress has been somewhat slower for the previous Reds player to achieve such a feat.

There's under the radar. And then there's Marko Grujic.

The Serbian midfielder will forever claim a little piece of history having been Jurgen Klopp's first signing as Reds boss, snapped up for £5.1million from Red Star Belgrade in January 2016.

Liverpool supporters were given a first glimpse of the new boy later that year, when a series of encouraging pre-season outings culminated with him nodding in the fourth goal in a comprehensive dismissal of Barcelona – Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez et al – at Wembley.

Since then, though, Anfield take-off has eluded Grujic.

There were two League Cup starts and six substitute appearances during an injury-hampered debut campaign.

After another five outings from the bench the following season, Grujic was shipped off to Cardiff City for six months where his form helped earn promotion from the Championship and a place in Serbia's World Cup squad.

Hertha Berlin was his next destination, spending the entirety of the 2018-19 season with the Bundesliga side where only injury and suspension prevented him from improving on his five goals in 23 games.

Grujic will return to Hertha again for the forthcoming term, opting to ignore the advances of Eintracht Frankfurt and Werder Bremen along with Atalanta and Brighton and Hove Albion.

That there were so many top-tier clubs eager to take on the Serbian underlines the impact made at Hertha, with then head coach Pal Dardai stating earlier this year Grujic is “by far the best midfielder I've seen in my time at the club”.

Yet to most Liverpool fans, Grujic is a mystery, an enigmatic figure of which only fleeting sightings have been captured.

Small wonder. He hasn't started a game for Liverpool since the 2-0 League Cup defeat at Leicester City in September 2017 while his last Reds outing was a brief run-out from the bench in the 5-1 win at Brighton in December a few months later.

Indeed, the sum total of Grujic's Premier League experience amounts to 52 minutes spread over eight substitute appearances.

Grujic, an imposing 6ft 3ins tall, has already hinted he has the physical capabilities of withstanding life in the English top flight.

And chief reason behind Klopp rubberstamping a return to Hertha was how they have allowed Grujic – who scored five goals in 23 appearances last term – to develop in his preferred position, in the midfield two of a 4-2-3-1.

The clock, though, is ticking.

Having turned 23 in April, Grujic can no longer be considered a youngster, particularly when compared to the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez who have both cemented themselves as regulars in the first-team squad.

The intense competition for places in the Liverpool midfield has proven a considerable obstacle for the Serbian, with Gini Wijnaldum, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and Fabinho all recruited following his arrival.

Klopp, though, retains faith in Grujic. And with the likes of James Milner and Adam Lallana nearer the end than the beginning of their Anfield careers, there will likely be opportunities beyond next summer.

However, the reality is the next 12 months will determine whether Grujic can grasp that chance at Liverpool – or simply remain the answer to a quiz question for years to come.
