The mums, dads, brothers and sisters behind the Covid care home human rights outrage across Scotland

Just some of the faces behind the human rights outrage unfolding in Scotland’s care homes are today revealed by the Sunday Mail.

They range from 104-year-old great-grandmother Dora Nutt, who spent her birthday in isolation, to Philippa Lane, 18, who has cerebral palsy and misses the joy of ice cream with her family.

Not just statistics but real people – mums, dads, brothers, sisters, sons and daughters – forced to endure almost nine months cut off from loved ones.

Covid-19 is a killer disease for the elderly and ill. Some degree of restriction is unavoidable.

But the expert opinion is clear – locking families out is not an appropriate way to manage the risk and it has a devastating impact on mental and physical health.

That’s why other countries –like France, Ireland, Germany and Belgium – are using testing, PPE and strict but humane infection control to reunite families.

In Scotland, despite updated guidelines and promises of tests, thousands of families are being badly let down. Waiting in hope for a vaccine to arrive next year is an unacceptable cop-out.

For thousands of people in care homes, that will be too late – they need action now.
