The movie game

Almost every new Hollywood movie is now followed (or preceded) by a smartphone game. It may be an obvious publicity strategy for studios; for gamers, it just adds to the fun. Here are some of the latest mobile games based on movies.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E.: Mission Berlin

Price: Free

Download from: Google Play Store, Apple App Store

This is the official game of the recent spy film, The Man From U.N.C.L.E.. Set during the Cold War, the game features the European landmarks of the era brilliantly. The visuals are impressive. The game starts with hand-to-hand combat and stealth missions and goes on to become a more challenging, full-blown shooting game. You can play as CIA agent Napolean Solo or KGB agent Illya Kuryakin. The drawback: The interface feels a bit cluttered and some of the control keys are placed awkwardly. The stealth mode button, for instance, has been placed on the left side of the screen, so one ends up pressing it instead of the run/walk button.

Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation

Price: Free, with in-app (additional features) purchases from Rs.61-6,253

Download from: Google Play Store, Apple App Store

The game is an over-simplistic but engaging take on the movie Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation. Interestingly, you don’t get to play as the legendary spy Ethan Hunt, but as MI16 agent Solomon Lane, who is on Ethan’s trail. The game spans over a hundred shooting missions, leading to the ultimate showdown between Hunt and Solomon. It gets a bit repetitive, for the missions tend to look similar after a while. Player movement is auto-controlled, making it almost too easy for casual gamers. For a simple mobile game, it charges quite a premium for the weapon upgrades that are required after every mission.

Terminator Genisys: Revolution

Price: Free, with in-app purchases of Rs.63-6,382

Download from: Google Play Store, Apple App Store

This is a simple, first-person shooter game based on the latest movie in the Terminator franchise. It is the final showdown between Resistance, a group led by John Connor, and Skynet, a group controlled by machines. The controls are simple, the interface is clutter-free, and the plot, compelling. Player movements are auto-controlled, which gives you time to take aim and shoot at the machines. Rich graphics and simple game mechanics make it one of the most engrossing shooter games based on movies.

Jurassic World: The Game

Free, with in-app purchases of Rs.61-6,165

Download from: Google Play Store, Apple App Store

This is a strategy game, with the action sequences involving other players being tactical fights. Winning these one-offs is rewarded with new card packs and coins which help you build a park and unlock new dinosaurs. The gameplay can be a little complicated. It looks very compelling, especially when the special effects are used—the earth shakes every time the dinosaur moves. It is a short game in terms of plot length and unlike the other games, requires seamless Internet connectivity.
