The mouthwatering Indian food cooked on the street from a pop-up kitchen named the best to eat in Wales

Wales has crowned a street food vendor as the country's best after chefs battled it out for national acclaim.

Southern Indian street kitchen specialists, Keralan Karavan , have taken the top spot to win the Welsh Street Food Awards 2021.

The awards saw some of the most innovative and tasty food stalls go head to head for the title, and ultimately a place in the next round of the British Street Food Awards.

These will be held in Hull in September.

After a weekend of sampling the tasty treats at Cardiff's Roath Yard, hosted by Street Food Circus, guests were invited to vote for their favourites before the pros cast their judgements. Following the judges decision, led by Sam & Shauna from Hang Fire Southern Kitchen, Keralan Karavan were crowned champion.

The Indian specialists are a masterclass in pop-ups, they've been found at places like Pontcanna Market, Bub's, Motel Nights and more - you can check with their website to find out their latest pitch - and they are loved for their rainbow poppadoms, massala rolls and topped fries.

Organiser Richard Johnson said: "The Welsh Street Food Awards have always been special.

"And this year we managed to showcase an exciting breed of new traders. Mostly businesses who sprung up during [the pandemic]. The end result was higher quality food than ever before."

He added: "Keralan Karavan made the most of lockdown with pop-ups and home delivery, and developed a jazzed up Southern Indian kitchen that Sam and Shauna loved - they deserve to be champions."

Janet’s Authentic Northern Chinese restaurant was also praised, winning the people’s choice prize. Based in Pontypridd, Janet has had diners in awe of her amazing, cooked-to-order dishes inspired by her childhood cooking and her travels as a cabin crew member, you can read her story, here.
