In an interview on the Radio 4 Today programme on Friday Iain Duncan Smith, secretary of state for work and pensions, former leader of the Conservative party, once of Sandhurst military academy, married to the daughter of the 5th Baron Cottesloe, referred to the “elite” who had stifled debate on immigration. Someone please give this oppressed member of the proletariat a platform.

• Like Valerie Palmer (Letters, 8 March) I too was deprived of a favourite toy, but at the age of three. When I was leaving an isolation hospital in South Wales after being treated for scarlet fever, I had to watch a nurse put Nicky in the coal-burning stove near my bed. I know, of course, that 73 years ago it would be believed that the toy could be infected, but I didn’t know that at the time!
