'The most shocking thing': Two-year-old killed in double-fatal crash in WA's South West

A two-year-old is one of two people killed in the second double-fatal crash in Western Australia's South West this month.

A 57-year-old woman also died in the collision between three cars on the South Western Highway at 2:45pm on Sunday.

A 39-year-old woman was flown to Royal Perth Hospital with critical injuries.

Five other people, including four children aged between three and 12 years, were taken to Bunbury Hospital.

Police said a black Ford Territory with six people inside collided head on with a red Nissan X-trail and a silver Mazda 6 sedan driving behind it.

Second double fatal

The crash is the second double fatal in the South West this month, after James and Sabine Mather died on Bussell Highway in a head-on collision on November 1.

The pair left behind four young children.

South West district superintendent Geoff Stewart said the crashes were shocking for the families involved and the wider community.

"It's the most shocking thing that the community has to endure," Mr Stewart said.

"Once again we're sitting here talking about something shocking where we had two people lose their lives."

Deadliest month on WA roads

So far this year, 133 people have died on WA roads, 82 of those in regional WA.

Recent statistics from the Road Safety Commission showed 17 people had died in the last month, making it the deadliest month of the year.

The figure was 70 per cent higher than October last year.

This National Road Safety Week, the State Government has set a target of zero road fatalities and severe injuries by 2050.

A new 10-year road safety strategy released on Monday included improving roads to make them safer, enforcing safer road user behaviour, reducing speed limits, and enforcing safer vehicles.

To hit the target by 2050 the number of fatalities or severe injuries from accidents needed to be reduced by up to 70 per cent.
