The most ridiculous reasons people in Avon and Somerset have phoned 999

Avon and Somerset police receive thousands and thousands of emergency 999 calls on a weekly basis.

While most of these are genuine incidents, a few can only be described as nuisance calls from people who don't understand what a real emergency is.

The police force has shared examples on Twitter of some of the ridiculous and inane calls they receive and urged people to think before dialling 999.

One caller for example phoned "repeatedly" because his takeaway curry was cold while another called to report his neighbour wasn't recycling.

Perhaps the most inappropriate caller was a woman who proceeded to play an Akon song down the line and tell the call handler she was having sex.

Another time waster was a caller who invited the police control room to a party, saying: "I can imagine you would love to attend but may be a bit busy."

He was politely asked to clear the line.

The control room team also have to deal with accidental dials on top of nuisance calls and pranks, with one man accidentally pressing the emergency button while setting up his new phone.
