The most prolific speed camera in Wales is fully operational again and back in business

A speed camera in Wales prolific for catching people breaking the speed limit is back in business after being out of commission.

The device, located at the Newport Road Junction with Colchester Avenue in Cardiff, had been out of commission due to road surfacing issues.

The maintenance and repair work on this road is now complete and the camera system will be active once again within the next few weeks, GoSafe has said.

Back in 2015, we revealed how the speed camera was Wales's most prolific, A total of 12,107 motorists were caught by the camera between April 2014 and March 2015.

Most speeding offences are dealt with by way of a fixed penalty notice, resulting in three penalty points and a £100 fine - meaning the camera could have netted more than £1.2m.

The road is 30mph and is a "speed on green" camera system, meaning it detects vehicles exceeding the speed limit when the lights are green and detects red light offences when illuminated red.

The system was installed by Cardiff Council due to the collision and speed history on the road.

In 2010, a speed survey at the time showed 11% of vehicles were exceeding the speed limit with 0.3% of vehicles travelling at speeds of 45mph or more.

The biggest concern at the site, however, was the number of vehicles that had been observed travelling through the junction on a red light.

There had been a number of collisions at the site over the years and it was considered that if controls were not put in place to deter drivers from "jumping" the light then the frequency, and potentially the seriousness of these collisions would increase.

GoSafe Partnership Manager Teresa Ciano, said: “A subsequent speed survey indicated that there had been an increase in the number of drivers exceeding the speed limit to 29.7%.

"To ensure the safety of road users and pedestrians, especially in an area with numerous commercial outlets and approximately 17,000 vehicles per day utilising the road, having the system operational again will hopefully increase compliance and make Colchester Avenue a safer road for everyone.”
