The most popular baby names in Ireland over the past 50 years

The Central Statistics Office recently revealed the most popular baby names in Ireland for 2021.

The top five baby boy names included Jack, Noah, James, Conor and Rían. While for the girls, Fiadh came out on top followed by Grace, Emily, Sophie and Éabha.

The popularity of names have certainly changed over the years and we decided to take a look back at the most popular Irish baby names for the past 50 years.

Have a look at the list of the most popular baby names in Ireland down through the years and see if your name made the cut.

1971

Fifty years ago in 1971, the top five baby boy names included John, Michael, Patrick, David and James.

The majority of baby girls in that year were named Mary, Catherine, Margaret, Fiona and Sinéad.

1981

At the start of the '80s, John still secured the number one spot for baby boys born in Ireland with David, Michael, Patrick and Paul following closely behind.

For baby girls born in the same year, Mary was the majority choice again with Michelle, Sarah, Jennifer and Lisa making the top five list.

1991

In 1991, a newcomer gained number one status - David with John, James, Stephen and Michael being next in line for a baby boy name choices.

Meanwhile, there was no sign of Mary in the top five baby girl list with Sarah, Emma, Laura, Aoife and Ciara being the most popular options.

2001

Over 20 years ago, Jack, Sean, Adam, Conor and James were the most popular choices for baby boys born in Ireland at the start of the noughties decade.

Sarah managed to retain her crown for the most popular baby girl name choice in 2001 followed by Aoife, Emma, Chloe and Ciara.

2011

It seems that classic boys' names remain the preferred options for Irish parents with Jack, James, Sean, Daniel and Conor making the top five list ten years ago in 2011.

Whereas the five most popular names for girls born in 2011 has seen a complete overhaul compared to previous years with Emily, Sophie, Emma, Grace and Lily making the top five list.
