The 'most pointless gate' in Wales finally makes sense - sort of

The lone gate in Fforestfach, Swansea, became somewhat of an enigma to passers-by last month.

The seemingly pointless gate located in Pentregethin Road was surrounded by open land and had people scratching their heads and questioning its purpose.

Were they missing something, they wondered.

What confused people even more, was the small padlock attached to the gate, evidently to ensure maximum security.

The unusual gate is located behind the Fforestfach Retail Park on Pentregethin Road. (Google Maps)

Becca Wagstaff, 42 from Portmead said: "Random is definitely the right word. My fiancee saw it first and pointed it out so I took a picture. I was just baffled because it's a gate, just a gate and then behind it a set of wooden steps going nowhere.

"I'm sure there's good reason for it but just how is it, I was thinking - what on earth?"

There's another mystery in Carmarthen...

The gate also attracted a number of visitors trying to work out the function of the pointless gate and laughing at the oddity.

But now it seems that their questions have finally been answered as the gate has been accompanied by a metal fence and railings, surrounding the wooden steps.

It is believed to provide access to a storm drain located at the top of the stairs. (Jonathan Myers)

The steps beyond the gate lead to a manhole surrounded by woodland. The gate and stairs presumably are used to provide access to a storm drain situated there.

Despite attempts, Wales Online has been unable to identify the owner of the gate and fence which remain a mystery.

For now, however, we may be able to sleep a little easier knowing that at least some sense has been made of the gate, although it seems unlikely it would foil even the least determined of curious intruders desperate to use the steps and find out what's beyond.
